The iconic Changi Airport Terminal 4 is one completed with ingenious engineering processes and solutions. Faced with the challenge of having to complete the main terminal building in 30 months, productivity was key. To address this, most of the structure were prefabricated offsite, then transported and assembled onsite. The adoption of a full precast system approach for the second storey of the terminal building reduced the construction time by 64% compared to the conventional in-situ method.

The unique “Hat First” construction method was adopted for the terminal building. The roof was completed ahead of the floors below from the middle out. This provided a safe and conducive working environment for early commencement of finishing and services works as well as early installation of the airport’s Baggage Handling System.

To achieve a visually appealing, column-free hall, another engineering feat was the use of long steel roof trusses to support the roof of terminal departure hall.
