FutureArc Green Leadership Award 2016

A new eco-consciousness has created an expectation for green and sustainable campuses. The Pioneer and Crescent Halls at Nanyang Technological University was recently featured in FuturArc Journal as an example to follow (May-Jun issue, p 113).

A collaboration between RSP Architects Planners & Engineers and Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects, the eight-block dormitory was designed to be more than just a living space but also a learning lab to help students develop green citizenship.

The 5-page article describes the project as not only environmentally friendly but also cost-saving and health-enhancing. Green and user-sensitive strategies include a double-skin facade (to regulate sunlight and wind), a rainwater harvesting system and solar hot water panels. Despite the space constraint, winds flow uninterrupted throughout the development, thanks to double-loaded corridors and the innovative three-directional planar formation of each dormitory block.

Green and blue infrastructure feature extensively, forming a relaxing natural sanctuary that self-regulates air temperature, air quality, water drainage and noise. A double bank louvre system was initiated to enable optimal airflow and visual privacy. These green features, among many others, won the project a BCA Green Mark Platinum Award in 2013, and a BCI FuturArc Green Leadership Merit Award in 2016.

The article also highlights the project’s efficient construction, where the use of hollow core slabs and precast/ preassembled components significantly reduced the need for formwork, scaffolding and raw materials. The dorms were designed with the students’ needs in mind to build a home that combined optimal performance, aesthetics and function.
