Great Architectural Bake-Off
9 Oct 2018
As part of Archifest 2018, a team of RSP architects, led by Director Law Yoke Foong, participated for the first time in WATG’s Great Architectural Bake-Off in Singapore in September. Also organised in London, the second edition of the bake-off in Singapore brings together some of the leading architecture practices and sees the architects transfer their design skills from buildings to cakes.
Inspired by this year’s theme, ‘Asian Icons’, the RSP architects assumed a different role as bakers and recreated the iconic Changi Airport, including Jewel Changi Airport and the terminal buildings, entirely out of cake. They created a tasty rendition of the Singapore icon, using Gula Melaka Pandan and purple sweet potato cream cakes. To enhance the local flavors, the cakes were decorated with Cheese Tuiles, sugar crystals and Teh Tarik cookies.
Besides being the architects and civil & structural engineers for Terminals 1 and 2 and Jewel Changi Airport, RSP chose to recreate Changi Airport as an Asian icon for its cultural importance to Singaporeans, how it stands out among the urban cityscape and is the first building a tourist sees from a plane. The strong visual element of Jewel’s impressive glass and steel façade makes it memorable for visitors long after they leave, making it a distinctive icon of Singapore.
“The team spent three weeks outside of their day jobs conceptualising the design and prepping for the Bake-off,” shared RSP’s Managing Director, Mr Seah Chee Kien. “The cake had a strong local flavour, and visual flair – a good effort which RSP is very proud of!”
While cake is definitely not a medium which the architects are used to working with, the bake-off was a fun opportunity to let our team flex their creative muscles and think outside of the box. Bringing an Asian icon to life as cake – one which still needed stress testing and material selection on a smaller scale – certainly had its own challenges. Fortunately for this “building”, there was no need for engineering calculations or noise levels and glare tests!
